Thailand Tourist Visa

If you’re planning a holiday in Thailand, you’ll need a Thailand Tourist Visa to enter the country. This visa comes in two types: a Single-Entry Tourist Visa, which allows up to a 60-day stay, and a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa, valid for six months with a 60-day stay limit per visit.

What is a Thailand Tourist Visa?

The Thailand Tourist Visa is a stamp or document provided by a Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country, allowing entry for tourism or medical purposes. You can also apply online through the Thailand e-visa system, which some embassies exclusively use, meaning walk-ins are not permitted. Contact the embassy you will be applying from beforehand to learn more.

The Thai Tourist Visa differs from the Visa Exemption stamp, placed in your passport upon arrival in Thailand. Remember that you are not allowed to work in Thailand while holding this visa, as it’s only for tourism purposes. 

Tourist Visa for Thailand

Single-Entry Tourist Visa

  • Visa Duration: Valid for 3 months from the date of issue
  • Visa Type: Single entry
  • Length of Stay per Entry: Up to 60 days
  • Extendable: Yes, by an additional 30 days at a Thai immigration office
  • Obtainable From: Thai embassies or consulates abroad and e-visa portal
  • Option to Include Family: Not available as a package; each family member must apply individually.

The Single-Entry Tourist Visa is perfect for travelers planning one visit to Thailand. It allows a stay of up to 60 days, with the option to extend by 30 days once in Thailand. Upon leaving Thailand, this visa expires, and you will need a new visa to re-enter.

Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa

  • Visa Duration: Valid for 6 months from the date of issue
  • Visa Type: Multiple entry
  • Length of Stay per Entry: Up to 60 days
  • Extendable: Yes, by an additional 30 days per entry
  • Obtainable From: Thai embassies or consulates abroad and e-visa portal
  • Option to Include Family: Not available as a package; each family member must apply individually.

Visa on Arrival

If you’re from one of the 31 approved countries or regions, you can apply for a Visa on Arrival at immigration checkpoints when entering Thailand for tourism. This visa allows a stay of up to 15 days. To apply, you’ll need a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and the visa fee, which must be paid in cash, in Thai baht, upon arrival.

Visa Exemption

If you’re from one of 93 approved countries, you can enter Thailand under the Thai visa exemption program for tourism, business, urgent tasks, or short-term work for up to 60 days. This stay may be extended by an additional 30 days, though this decision is at the discretion of the immigration officer processing your application. To stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a different visa type before reaching the 90-day maximum.

90-Day Non-Immigrant Visa

The 90-Day Non-Immigrant Visa is a solid choice if you plan to stay in Thailand for purposes beyond tourism, such as business, education, or retirement. It grants an initial 90-day stay and can be extended to a one-year visa for specific reasons, like retirement or marriage, through the Thai Immigration Bureau. You can apply by mail, in person at a Thai Embassy or Consulate, or through the Thailand E-Visa portal, offering flexibility in the application process.

The Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa lets you enter Thailand as many times as you like within its six-month validity, but each stay is capped at 60 days. If you want to stay longer, you can extend your visit by 30 days at a Thai immigration office, which adds more flexibility to your travel plans. This visa is perfect for those who plan to take multiple trips to Thailand over six months, allowing plenty of time to explore.

Long-Term Thai Tourist Visas

If you plan on frequently visiting Thailand or staying here for extended periods of time, dealing with a Thai tourist visa is a frequent headache. Fortunately, there are alternative tourist visas intended for these needs. There are two long-term Thai tourist visas you can consider:

Thai Elite Visa

  • Visa Duration: Options for 5, 10, 15, or 20 years (based on chosen membership package)
  • Visa Type: Multiple entry
  • Length of Stay per Entry: 1 year
  • Extendable: Automatically renewed within the membership period
  • Obtainable From: Thailand Elite Visa agents and Thailand Privilege Card Company Limited
  • Option to Include Family: Yes, an additional fee applies per family member

The Thai Elite Visa provides a hassle-free, long-term stay for foreigners without the need for frequent renewals. Each entry permits a stay of up to one year without the need for a re-entry permit. Elite Visa holders also enjoy fast-tracked immigration, exclusive support, and discounts on services like airport transfers, healthcare, and leisure activities. Family members can be added to the membership for an additional fee, making it a flexible option for those wishing to reside comfortably in Thailand long-term.

DTV Visa Thailand

  • Visa Duration: 5 years
  • Visa Type: Multiple entry
  • Length of Stay per Entry: 180 days
  • Extendable: Yes, once per entry
  • Obtainable From: A Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate or online via Thailand’s official e-visa website
  • Option to Include Family: Yes

With a DTV Visa, you can leave and re-enter Thailand as often as you like without needing a re-entry permit, unlike other Thai tourist visas. Each entry allows a 180-day stay, after which you can simply exit and re-enter Thailand to reset for another 180 days.

Alternatively, you can extend your stay once per entry to add 180 days on top of your current stay. By doing so, you can remain in Thailand for nearly a full year before needing to leave and re-enter.

But this visa isn’t available to just anyone, unlike the tourist and Thailand Elite Visas. To qualify, you must be a remote worker or “digital nomad” with proven employment or participate in so-called Thai Soft Power Activities.

What are the Requirements for a Thai Tourist Visa?

When applying for a Thailand Tourist Visa, you will need to present a collection of documents and pay an application fee. However, both the fee and required documents can change without notice and may vary by country and embassy. It’s recommended that you contact your local Thai Embassy to confirm the latest requirements, price, and whether an in-person application is necessary.

Some countries offer a digital option, the Thai E-Visa, which provides a faster way to obtain your Thailand Tourist Visa. Be sure to ask about the E-Visa when reaching out to your local Thai Embassy.

The documents required to apply for the Thailand Tourist Visa include:

  • A completed application form
  • A passport or travel document with at least six months of validity
  • A passport-sized photograph
  • Onward/return travel tickets (paid in full)
  • Proof of financial stability, such as a bank statement (10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family)

  1. Hi … we are travelling to Thailand and staying for 32 days …. We fly from Nth Qld Australia in 5 weeks. If we need a visa can we apply for it once we arrive at Bangkok airport … as if we need to apply in Australia we would have to post our passports to the Sydney embassy and are afraid our passports won’t arrive back in time as they quote 4-6 weeks turnaround

      You will need to apply for a visa at the Embassy in Sydney if you wish to stay for 32 days, but if you wish to apply for a visa upon arriving at the Bangkok airport, you can come to Thailand and stay for a maximum of 30 days through the Visa Exemption Scheme, as Australia is one of the listed countries that qualify for the Visa Exemption.

      Yes, you may extend your current entry stamp for additional 30 days. You can do this at any local immigration office. The fee is 1900 Thai baht.
      About the plan to change to an ED visa, in some instances it might be possible to do it in Bangkok. We recommend for you to directly contact the school about this.

We are Canadian citizens and would like to stay In Thailand for maximum 90 days …we understand there is a 60 day visa which can be extended by another 30 days at a local Immigration Office ..is that correct ?   28. I am attempting to fill in the Thai e-visa form for the SINGLE STAY TOURIST VISA. Supporting documents re asking for a confirmation letter from employer, and the Identity of the person in Thailand asking me to stay. Neither is applicable – I am a UK citizen simply wanting a Thai TR visa.

  43. This might be a silly question. I’d already got my Single-Entry 60 days TR visa. My original plan was to travel from US to Bangkok on October 1st. What if I start my vacation a couple of week earlier and visit Vietnam and Laos then go straight to Thailand. The flight information will not match what is on my approved TR visa application.   52. Hi I am Polish and will be in Thailand from the 1 Jan 2023 on a 60 day tourist visit and would like to extend it to another 30 days (will be 90 days in Thailand). I would like to spend some time in Thailand and plan to marry my thai girl later on. But the visa will be expired before that happens. So, iI leave Thailand after 90 days (with granted extension visa) and visit another country can I re-apply for a new Visa ? And if I can, can I do so online?

    2. The current tourist visa has been extended from 15 days to 30 days until March 2023. I plan to visit Thailand in April or later in 2023. The policy is not so clear and I am not sure if I am still qualified for visa on arrival.
