Thailand as one of the dream destinations in Asia has taken a major step in progressively easing the entry restrictions. With the ending of quarantine for vaccinated travelers from May 1, 2022, the country is pushing toward fully opening its border to the world.

This swift action by the government is carried out with the hopes to boost tourism and revive the country’s COVID-stricken economy.

Another good news is that the pre-arrival and on-arrival RT-PCR test is no longer mandatory. Though some conditions remain including the registration on Thailand Pass as well as the insurance with required minimum coverage.

Given this latest easing of the pandemic-related restrictions, travelers who are qualified will be able to freely explore and experience the vibrancy of Thailand upon their arrival.

Who is Eligible for the No Quarantine Entry?

1. Fully vaccinated travelers

Travelers who are fully vaccinated are now allowed to enter the Kingdom without quarantine or any mandatory COVID tests.

The travelers must:

  • Be fully vaccinated with a minimum of 2 doses of an approved vaccine no less than 14 days prior to entering Thailand.
    • Approved vaccines by the Thai FDA consist of Sinovac, AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, Sinopharm, Johnson & Johnson, Sputnik, Covaxin, Novavax and Medigen
  • Complete registration on Thailand Pass
  • Attach passport copy
  • Attach a certificate of vaccination
  • Attach evidence of insurance policy with minimum coverage of USD 10,000 (Thais and expats covered under Thailand’s public health system are exempted.)

2. Unvaccinated travelers with negative RT-PCR test

Travelers who are unvaccinated or under-vaccinated also have a choice of a quarantine-free entry. Those who are not fully vaccinated and are able to present the negative RT-PCR test results issued within 72 hours prior to their trip can enjoy the same treatment as the fully vaccinated tourists, meaning they can freely explore Thailand and bypass the quarantine. Alternatively, those arriving without the negative test results must complete a minimum of a 5-day stay in an Alternative Quarantine (AQ) hotel.

The travelers must:

  • Complete registration on Thailand Pass
  • Attach passport copy
  • Attach evidence of a negative RT-PCR test taken within 72 hours of travel
  • Attach evidence of insurance policy with minimum coverage of USD 10,000 (Thais and expats covered under Thailand’s public health system are exempted.)

For children below 18

  • Children aged 18 and under are not required to be vaccinated on the condition that they are accompanied by their parents during the trip.
  • Travelers aged 12-17 who travel to Thailand unaccompanied by any parent must have received at least 1 dose of an approved vaccine for a minimum of 14 days prior to the trip.

For those who recovered from COVID-19

Travelers who were infected with COVID must be vaccinated with at least 1 dose of an approved vaccine after recovery to be considered fully vaccinated. A certificate of recovery must also be provided in the Thailand Pass system.

What is Thailand Pass and How to Register?

Thailand Pass is an online system designed for travelers, both Thais and foreigners to input the necessary information and essential documents in regard to travel and health. Travelers arriving from abroad are required to upload proof of vaccination, insurance coverage evidence, and other travel-related documents. The system will then generate a QR Code which will be crucial during the immigration process. It is compulsory that all travelers complete the Thailand Pass application and obtain a QR code before commencing their journey to Thailand.

Registration on the Thailand Pass website

Once travelers have prepared the documents based on their vaccination status as mentioned above, they must proceed with the Thailand Pass application.

Travelers can apply for Thailand Pass via https://tp.consular.go.th.

They will be asked to select whether they are traveling by Air or by Land and if they are Thai or foreign nationals. Then, they will be informed of the conditions and required documents for a “No Quarantine” plan. Upon selecting the plan, travelers can fill out travel and health-related information along with submitting the documents.

When should you register for Thailand Pass?

Based on the recommendation of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, travelers planning to visit Thailand are encouraged to apply for Thailand Pass at least 2 days prior to departure as it will take time for the application to be reviewed and approved.

However, with the current entry regulations which demand fewer documents, the processing time is expected to be faster than before.

If the application is approved, travelers will receive the QR Code to enter Thailand.

Please note that failure to provide essential information and documents may result in denied boarding and entry into the Kingdom.

What happens when you arrive in Thailand?

Once arrived in Thailand, all travelers will need to undergo basic screening, such as a temperature check, and will be asked to present all of the evidence to the officers in charge of health control and immigration.

Travelers who are fully vaccinated or those with negative RT-PCR test results will then be allowed to travel anywhere in Thailand without further tests.

Despite the removal of pre-arrival and on-arrival tests for Thailand entry, travelers are still advised to re-check with their airline about the enforced COVID measures as some airlines may require negative test results from passengers prior to boarding.

Since the cancellation of “Test & Go” and the “Sandbox” schemes, Thailand has gained over 300K tourists within a week and the number is expected to grow over time.

Whether you’re traveling for leisure or business, Thailand is now fully open to visitors from all over the world.
