Visa-Free Period In Thailand to be Changed Again, Reduced To 30 Days

The Thai government has announced plans to again adjust the permitted stay period for those entering Thailand through the visa exemption scheme. This measure aims to curb illegal business activities while still allowing tourists enough time to explore and enjoy their trip.

Though the details are still being finalized, the change to the visa-free stay period is expected to be implemented soon.

What Is the Current Thai Visa-Exemption Program?

As of March 2025, travelers from 93 countries can enter and remain in Thailand for up to 60 days visa-free. This policy was introduced in July 2024, when the government expanded the visa exemption program from 57 countries to 93 with the goal of attracting more tourists to Thailand. Prior to the change, visa-free stays were limited to 30 days.

However, according to tourism business operators, the majority of visa-free travelers only stay in Thailand for two to three weeks, and illegal workers have exploited the system to the detriment of local businesses. As a result of these concerns, the government has set plans to return the stay period to 30 days.

How Is the Stay Limit Being Changed for Visa-Free Travelers?

While no exact date has been set for this change, Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports has confirmed that the visa-free stay period will be reduced from 60 days to 30 days, following the concerns raised by tourism-focused organizations about illegal employment and unauthorized businesses. One major complaint has come from Thai tour operators, who point out that there has been an influx of illegal Chinese tour operators abusing the long visa-free period and undercutting local operators.

For travelers planning to stay longer than 30 days, the option to apply for a 30-day extension at a Thai immigration office is expected to remain available, as no change has been announced. This means that even after the change takes effect, it should still be possible to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days visa-free with an extension.

The government has also made no official announcement regarding the list of eligible countries for the visa exemption scheme. Because of this, travelers from any of the 93 countries should still be granted visa-free entry into Thailand, but with their initial stay of 60 days reduced to 30 days.

Why Is the Visa-Free Stay Duration Being Reduced?

The Thai government’s decision to reinstate the 30-day limit on visa-free entry was driven by several factors, but chief among them is the concern over illegal or “nominee” companies operating with unregistered foreign workers and the lack of benefit for tourists:

  1. Prevent Unauthorized Business Activities: Officials have raised concerns that some foreigners use the visa exemption program to work without permits or operate businesses without paying proper taxes. By shortening the visa-free stay period, the government aims to minimize visa misuse and improve immigration oversight.

  2. Limited Demand For 60-Day Stays: According to tourism operators, the majority of visa-free travelers do not stay in Thailand for the full 60 days. Long-haul travelers typically stay between two and three weeks, while travelers from neighboring countries spend an average of seven days. Because of this, the government sees little justification for maintaining the longer stay.

By adjusting to the initial visa-free stay period, the government hopes to strike a balance between promoting tourism and enforcing immigration regulations so that Thailand can remain an attractive destination while protecting local businesses from illegal foreign competition.
