If you’re planning a holiday in Thailand, you’ll need a Thailand Tourist Visa to enter the country. This visa comes in two types: a Single-Entry Tourist Visa, which allows up to a 60-day stay, and a Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa, valid for six months with a 60-day stay limit per visit.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the different Tourist Visa options, explain the requirements, and cover alternative options like the Visa Exemption scheme for eligible passport holders seeking a shorter 30-day stay.
What is a Thailand Tourist Visa?
The Thailand Tourist Visa is a stamp or document provided by a Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country, allowing entry for tourism or medical purposes. You can also apply online through the Thailand e-visa system, which some embassies exclusively use, meaning walk-ins are not permitted. Contact the embassy you will be applying from beforehand to learn more.
The Thai Tourist Visa differs from the Visa Exemption stamp, placed in your passport upon arrival in Thailand. Remember that you are not allowed to work in Thailand while holding this visa, as it’s only for tourism purposes.
Single-Entry Tourist Visa
- Visa Duration: Valid for 3 months from the date of issue
- Visa Type: Single entry
- Length of Stay per Entry: Up to 60 days
- Extendable: Yes, by an additional 30 days at a Thai immigration office
- Obtainable From: Thai embassies or consulates abroad and e-visa portal
- Option to Include Family: Not available as a package; each family member must apply individually.
The Single-Entry Tourist Visa is perfect for travelers planning one visit to Thailand. It allows a stay of up to 60 days, with the option to extend by 30 days once in Thailand. Upon leaving Thailand, this visa expires, and you will need a new visa to re-enter.
Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa
- Visa Duration: Valid for 6 months from the date of issue
- Visa Type: Multiple entry
- Length of Stay per Entry: Up to 60 days
- Extendable: Yes, by an additional 30 days per entry
- Obtainable From: Thai embassies or consulates abroad and e-visa portal
- Option to Include Family: Not available as a package; each family member must apply individually.
Visa on Arrival
If you’re from one of the 31 approved countries or regions, you can apply for a Visa on Arrival at immigration checkpoints when entering Thailand for tourism. This visa allows a stay of up to 15 days. To apply, you’ll need a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and the visa fee, which must be paid in cash, in Thai baht, upon arrival.
Visa Exemption
If you’re from one of 93 approved countries, you can enter Thailand under the Thai visa exemption program for tourism, business, urgent tasks, or short-term work for up to 60 days. This stay may be extended by an additional 30 days, though this decision is at the discretion of the immigration officer processing your application. To stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a different visa type before reaching the 90-day maximum.
90-Day Non-Immigrant Visa
The 90-Day Non-Immigrant Visa is a solid choice if you plan to stay in Thailand for purposes beyond tourism, such as business, education, or retirement. It grants an initial 90-day stay and can be extended to a one-year visa for specific reasons, like retirement or marriage, through the Thai Immigration Bureau. You can apply by mail, in person at a Thai Embassy or Consulate, or through the Thailand E-Visa portal, offering flexibility in the application process.
The Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa lets you enter Thailand as many times as you like within its six-month validity, but each stay is capped at 60 days. If you want to stay longer, you can extend your visit by 30 days at a Thai immigration office, which adds more flexibility to your travel plans. This visa is perfect for those who plan to take multiple trips to Thailand over six months, allowing plenty of time to explore.
Long-Term Thai Tourist Visas
If you plan on frequently visiting Thailand or staying here for extended periods of time, dealing with a Thai tourist visa is a frequent headache. Fortunately, there are alternative tourist visas intended for these needs. There are two long-term Thai tourist visas you can consider:
Thai Elite Visa
- Visa Duration: Options for 5, 10, 15, or 20 years (based on chosen membership package)
- Visa Type: Multiple entry
- Length of Stay per Entry: 1 year
- Extendable: Automatically renewed within the membership period
- Obtainable From: Thailand Elite Visa agents and Thailand Privilege Card Company Limited
- Option to Include Family: Yes, an additional fee applies per family member
The Thai Elite Visa provides a hassle-free, long-term stay for foreigners without the need for frequent renewals. Each entry permits a stay of up to one year without the need for a re-entry permit. Elite Visa holders also enjoy fast-tracked immigration, exclusive support, and discounts on services like airport transfers, healthcare, and leisure activities. Family members can be added to the membership for an additional fee, making it a flexible option for those wishing to reside comfortably in Thailand long-term.
DTV Visa Thailand
- Visa Duration: 5 years
- Visa Type: Multiple entry
- Length of Stay per Entry: 180 days
- Extendable: Yes, once per entry
- Obtainable From: A Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate or online via Thailand’s official e-visa website
- Option to Include Family: Yes
With a DTV Visa, you can leave and re-enter Thailand as often as you like without needing a re-entry permit, unlike other Thai tourist visas. Each entry allows a 180-day stay, after which you can simply exit and re-enter Thailand to reset for another 180 days.
Alternatively, you can extend your stay once per entry to add 180 days on top of your current stay. By doing so, you can remain in Thailand for nearly a full year before needing to leave and re-enter.
But this visa isn’t available to just anyone, unlike the tourist and Thailand Elite Visas. To qualify, you must be a remote worker or “digital nomad” with proven employment or participate in so-called Thai Soft Power Activities.
What are the Requirements for a Thai Tourist Visa?
When applying for a Thailand Tourist Visa, you will need to present a collection of documents and pay an application fee. However, both the fee and required documents can change without notice and may vary by country and embassy. It’s recommended that you contact your local Thai Embassy to confirm the latest requirements, price, and whether an in-person application is necessary.
Some countries offer a digital option, the Thai E-Visa, which provides a faster way to obtain your Thailand Tourist Visa. Be sure to ask about the E-Visa when reaching out to your local Thai Embassy.
The documents required to apply for the Thailand Tourist Visa include:
- A completed application form
- A passport or travel document with at least six months of validity
- A passport-sized photograph
- Onward/return travel tickets (paid in full)
- Proof of financial stability, such as a bank statement (10,000 THB per person or 20,000 THB per family)
- Proof of hotel booking or private accommodation arrangements

Thai Tourist Visa FAQ
How do I get a tourist visa for Thailand?
You can apply online for a 60-Day Tourist Visa, which allows a 60-day stay upon entry and can be extended for an additional 30 days. Alternatively, you can enter Thailand under the Visa Exemption program, giving you 60 days upon arrival, with the option to extend for another 30 days. You must apply from a country with a Royal Thai Embassy either in person or via the e-Visa system.
How much does a Thai Tourist Visa cost?
The cost of a Thai Tourist Visa depends on the applicant’s country of residence and the visa type (single-entry or multiple-entry). It’s best to check with the nearest Thai Embassy or Consulate for current visa fees, as prices and payment methods can vary by location.
How long does it take to process a Thai Tourist Visa?
The processing time for a Thai Tourist Visa usually ranges from 2 to 10 business days, depending on the consulate or embassy where you apply and whether you apply in person or by mail. Applications submitted online or at major embassies may be processed more quickly, while others might take a few extra days.
Can I apply for a Thai Tourist Visa online?
Certain nationalities can apply for a Thai Tourist Visa online through Thailand’s official e-Visa portal. This process enables you to complete forms, upload documents, and pay fees electronically. Once approved, you’ll receive a confirmation email to present upon arrival in Thailand.

Please do something with the scam of VOA in the airport, they are charging extra and torching Tourist.
Thailand VOA was so easy and helpful before, but not anymore, your officers are just looting tourist. Receipt given only for 2000baht. No receipt for 200baht
Even tho people don’t want your express visa, they are forced to pay. They will not ask a single question if u pay extra.
Also please clear about the money to be carried must be in only Thai baht?
Why are the immigration officers not accepting other currencies as proof of money equivalent to Thai baht?
Hi Karthik,
You can carry 20,000 bath per pax, and 40,000 bath if family.

2. I have 2 COVID shots, is that sufficient?
3. Under what circumstances can my entry be denied even after I get the tourist visa?
Thanks

Hi there,
I live in Germany but I have an Iranian passport.
I will travel with my boyfriend from 18 Dec 2022 for 15 days. My boyfriend is German.
As I understand he can use a free 30 days visa but I need to apply for a visa since I am an Iranian citizen.
My question is can I apply for the visa online or should I go to the embassy in Germany? Do I need travel insurance or is the one I have right now validated?
How long will take to have a visa? For 18 December when should I apply for the visa?
Thanks
Hi Nagh,
Iranian citizens need to get a visa for Thailand by going to the nearest embassy. The stay is usually short with a period of 90 days and visa expires in 90 days. Travel insurance is not compulsory but still highly recommended.

Hello, Nuwan.
As of this moment, the Thai E-Visa system is not available to citizens of Pakistan.
Hi Rex,
Thank you for replying to my comment. The part of the application this concerns is:
9. Identity of the person
inviting you to stay e.g. Thai
ID card, Passport
Would a hotel booking satisfy this? Or what else is needed instead?
Many Thanks,
Lachie
Dear Lachie,
Yes, if you are staying in a hotel instead of a Thai person’s house, you can use the hotel booking confirmation.
Thank you.

Hello, I have a US passport, I will arrive in Thailand on September 30. I will be using TR visa Single-Entry, can I apply for a Re-Entry Permit that same day when I arrive at BKK? I plan to fly to Laos the next day October 1 for 7 days then return to Bangkok to continue my 60 days TR visa. Thank you in advance.
Dear Van,
Yes, you are able to do that. If you have an e-visa, you may opt not to use the TR visa on September 30. You can keep it first and just use it when you return from Laos to Thailand as long as the TR visa is still valid to be used for entry.

I do not know which hotels are approved for your quarantine in Bangkok. I checked the only one I knew and that was full for February 8, to the 16, 2022. Can you tell me what hotels are approved ?

Hello, I have an approved Thailand Pass however, I had to cancel my scheduled trip as my passport that was approved was stolen. I have acquired a new passport with a new passport number. Is my approved Thailand Pass for test and go still valid and can I update my information of it is still valid?
Dear John,
Good day.
If you will apply for the new Thailand Pass, it will be either Sandbox or Quarantine. I believe you can still use your old Test and Go and new passport to travel as long as the details on your vaccination and arrival date remain the same. If your new arrival date has been changed more than 3 days from the original date of arrival, you must get a new Thailand Pass.
Thank you.
Dear sir
Is there a six month spouse visa available from November 1st 2021
Dear Andrew,
Good day.
The Thai Non Immigrant O visa for marriage is valid for 3 months in which you are able to extend for another 12 months at the local immigration office in Thailand. You can apply for the Non Immigrant O visa and COE from the Thai Embassy in order to travel to Thailand. If you need help for the visa and COE, please visit http://www.siam-legal.com/coe
Thank you.

Hello Visa team,
I am a professional life coach from Germany doing surgery companion trips for a living. I am currently in Hyderabad, India, and my next client wants for me to travel to Bangkok with her for surgery.
How do I go about that now?
Procedures are not fully clear for me at this time .
Dear Mona,
Good day.
The COE application and issuance in India has been suspended, therefore no one at this time can travel from India to Thailand.
Thank you.
Hello!
I’m from Myanmar and currently living in Dubai. Me and my son going to travel Thailand. Do we need visa? What documents we need to prepare?
Thank you.
Sandi
Dear Sandi,
Good day.
Yes, you definitely need to apply for the visa and COE prior to coming to Thailand. You must apply for the Tourist Visa which will allow you to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days from date of arrival. You need to secure your flight itinerary, COVID 19 insurance, ASQ Hotel for 14 days and other documents required by the Thai Consulate in Dubai. Kindly call the consulate for more information.
Thank you.
Good day,
my name is Michelle I’m from Philippines planning to travel in your country. do i need a visa or COE to enter Thailand?
Thank you
Michelle Dequito
Dear Michelle,
Good day.
Yes, you need to have a COE or certificate of entry to travel to Thailand. You may get a COE based on Visa Exemption of 45 days or you can get a COE under a Tourist visa or even a Non Immigrant visa as long as you apply for this visa from the Thai Embassy in Manila.
For the application of COE under Visa Exemption, you do not need to contact the Thai Embassy. The application will be processed online. You only need to make sure that you have booked the ASQ Hotel and you have purchased COVID 19 insurance.
Thank you.
